Trenching in Occupied or Active Buildings

Commercial trenching often happens inside spaces where the building is still active or other trades are working nearby.

Slab-on-Grade Trenching

Many commercial trenching projects in Toronto and the GTA involve slab-on-grade concrete.

These jobs are common when a tenant, plumber or GC needs to modify an existing unit for a new layout.

Examples include:

• adding floor drains;
• relocating plumbing;
• installing new sanitary lines;
• preparing for commercial equipment;
• running new refrigeration or mechanical lines;
• opening the slab for drainage connections.

Before pricing slab-on-grade trenching, we need to understand the trench length, width, slab thickness, access and removal requirements.

What We Need for a Trenching Quote

Interior Slab Cutting With Wet Saws

For most commercial trenching projects, we use concrete saw cutting to create clean trench lines before removal.

Depending on the site, we may use electric or hydraulic wet cutting equipment to reduce dust and keep the work more controlled inside the building.

Wet cutting helps reduce airborne dust, but it also creates slurry. On interior projects, slurry control matters. We plan the work area so water and slurry do not spread into finished areas, occupied spaces or sensitive zones.

Controlled Concrete Removal

After the trench is cut, the concrete can be removed in controlled sections.

This is especially useful when the trench runs through an active renovation site or a commercial unit where other trades need to keep working.

Concrete removal and disposal are available when requested.

Excavation and disposal are optional and quoted separately. Plumbing and other system installation are not included.

DRM Cutting performs the concrete-related work: scanning, cutting, trenching and concrete removal when included in the quote. Plumbing, drainage, refrigeration, electrical and mechanical installation must be handled by the licensed trade responsible for that system.
